Sept. 7	Bag Challenge Your quilt deserves a hand-made bag! Myrna Rosebrook challenged the members to make a fabric bag to transport their quilts (especially those being entered in the Quilt Show) Create a "Crazy Quilt" Patch Presenters: Leann Clifford, Corrie Beyer Koopman Description: Participants randomly cut and placed small pieces of assorted fabric on the sticky surface of a prepared 8" muslin square with "Wonderunder" pressed on one side. When the square was completely covered with fabric pieces, they were pressed in place with a hot iron. Participants were encouraged to save this square for a "nine-patch" sampler quilt comprised of squares using techniques that will be introduced at upcoming the meetings. Alternately the "crazy quilt" patch can be used to decorate a bag (see the September Challenge.
Oct. 5	Sewing Machine Maintenance Harold Leudtke , Northgate Sewing Centre provided a primer on caring and maintaining your sewing machine. Construct a Fabric Name Tag Leann Clifford and Corrie Beyer Koopman lead the meeting participants in making a no-sew fabric name tag.
Nov. 2	A Quilter's Thread Primer Gail Cepka, owner of Astrin's Attic provided an overview about using thread to extend and enhance quilting projects, based on Wonderfil Specialty Threads. Download a copy of her presentation notes.
Dec. 7	Trunk Show Leann Clifford provided an inspiring display of her creative works, demonstrating a wide range of techniques. Food, Fun and Visiting Everyone enjoyed a chance to win a basketful of quilting goodies, good food and visiting with friends.
Jan. 4	The Essential Tool Kit for Quilters Presenter: Sharon Fraser Description: instructions and demonstration to make a Guild Sewing Case.
Feb. 1	Rusting Fabric Corrie recommended Rust-Tex a blog by fabric artist Lois Jarvis for more information about fabric rusting techniques.
Mar. 1	Heather Grover demonstrates Kumihimo, a Japanese braid-making technique, using fabric and a variety of other embellishments. Heather recommends: Felt, Fabric, and Fiber Jewelry: 20 Beautiful Projects to Bead, Stitch, Knot, and Braid, by Sherri Haab (includes Heather's Kumihimo demonstration); Fibreart Montage: Combining Quilting, Embroidery and Photography with Embellishments, by Judith Baker Montano; Threadwork: Silks, Stitches, Beads & Cords, by Effie Mitrofanis.
Apr. 5	Kathy Tanner, from Harmony Hand Dyes in Tisdale provided an informative workshop on fabric dying methods, inspiring Guild memebers to explore the many possibilities for creating unique fabrics for their quilts.
May 3	Quilters' Haven Presenter: Arlys Description: quilting techniques, an overview of new products and tools.

Winter 2011: Beginning Quilting Classes for Members Only

There will be 3 months of introductory quilting classes that will include rotary cutting basics, primarily patchwork (strip quilting), quilt construction, borders, simple quilting, and binding. Participants will have some homework between each month. The project is making a small quilt (44"x44" without borders), using strip piecing to make the irish chain block used in the quilt. Yardage for different sizes of the quilt can be provided.

• Wed. Mar. 9 or Sat. Mar. 12

• Supplies:
• Fabric (for 44"x44" quilt)
  1. 1 yard scrap material for rotary cutter lesson
  2. 2 yards dark fabric (1 yard for the quilt, 1 yard for the border and binding)
  3. 3 yards light fabric (1.5 yards for the quilt, 1.5 yards for the border)
• Sewing Machine with extra bobbins, needles, and manual
• Rotary Cutter with new blade
• Scissors, sharp pins, seam ripper
• 17"x23" Mat (or larger)
• 6"x24" ruler (8.5"x24" ruler is also acceptable)
• Thread to match fabric
• Note book pencil & eraser

Guild Retreats

April 9, 2011: Heritage Home Quilt Show, Lumsden

You are invited to the Heritage Home Quilt Show in Lumsden. This special Show is dedicated to the late Lauren Rice, a local avid quilter who touched the hearts of many in our community. Funds raised will be donated to the Lumsden & District Heritage Home in memory of Lauren. Many of her quilts will be displayed at the show. Please see details below:

April 29-30, 2011: York Colony Quilters' Guild, Yorkton

The York Colony Quilters' Guild, April 29-30 quilt show "From Pieces to Masterpieces" celebrates the art and diversity of the quilt through the many techniques, designs and patterns used by quilters. May 25-28, 2011 - Quilt Show - CQA / ACC Quilt Ontario, hosted by London Ontario

The quilt show host is asking quilters to sew fabric leaf bowls (with spring coloured fabrics if possible) using a design created by London quilt artist Jill Buckley.
